A group of demonstrators took to the streets of Abuja on Friday, voicing their concerns over the dissolution of five Kano emirates by Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration.
Carrying placards, the protesters called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the escalating crisis to prevent further unrest in Kano State.
Organized under the banner of the Northern Nigeria Peace and Development Foundation, the protesters expressed their discontent, labeling the dissolution as a political vendetta and an abuse of power by Governor Yusuf.
They raised concerns about the destabilization of the traditional institution and urged for urgent measures to restore peace and order in the state.
The dissolution of the emirates followed the recent passage of the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 into law, which led to the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano.
The protesters accused Governor Yusuf of manipulating the state legislature to fulfill his political objectives, ignoring democratic principles and the rule of law.
Abdullahi Muhammed Saleh, the coordinator of the protest, criticized the governor’s track record, describing it as anti-people and anti-democratic. He emphasized the need for President Tinubu’s intervention to address the crisis and restore the autonomy of the traditional institution in Kano State.
In their appeal for swift action, the protesters called on the national leadership to prevent further deterioration of the situation, ensuring stability and unity in Kano State.
