Adia Sowho has stepped down from her role as Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) of MTN Nigeria.
Sowho, who made history in August 2021 by becoming the first female CMO at MTN Nigeria, has left under what sources suggest might be contentious circumstances.
Sowho’s career began in 2001 after earning an engineering degree. She initially worked as a radio frequency engineer at US Cellular Corporation in Chicago before moving into management consulting with Deloitte Consulting LLP in 2007.
According to an insider, Sowho’s departure was by mutual agreement, though MTN Nigeria had not released an official statement at the time of reporting. Her exit comes amid unverified allegations of corruption.
Lakimfa Goodluck, an MTN spokesperson, described Sowho’s departure as a “mutual disengagement.” When questioned about the corruption allegations, Goodluck reiterated that it was a mutual decision.
In a related development, Ugonwa Nwoye will assume the role of acting Chief Marketing Officer in addition to her current duties as Chief Customer and Experience Officer (CCXO). Nwoye, a C-suite executive, oversees the largest customer care operation in telecommunications across Africa and the Middle East.
She is responsible for customer operations strategy, design and implementation of contacting services, as well as the up-sell and support experience for all customer segments targeted by MTN Nigeria.
