Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has called for an emergency Security Council Meeting in response to the escalating crisis involving local government leadership.
The situation follows threats from local government chairmen, whose terms ended on Monday, to invade council secretariats.
Governor Fubara emphasized the urgency of the meeting, citing the recent threats to state peace posed by the outgoing local government council chairmen.
“You are all aware that the tenure of the council chairmen ended yesterday, 17th June 2024,” Fubara stated. “Today, we have ordered the Heads of Local Government Administration to take charge while awaiting further directives.”
The Governor expressed concern over reports of invasions at several council secretariats by the former chairmen, describing the situation as “really unfortunate.” He assured that the Security Council Meeting aims to address these disruptions and maintain the peace in the state.
“We are also aware that our enemy is planning a lot of things,” Fubara added. “But we will not fall into that plot. We will not allow them to destroy the peace that we are enjoying in the state.”
The meeting underscores the administration’s commitment to ensuring stability and order amidst the current political tension.
