A twin duplex located at Magodo Phase II in Lagos suburb was ravaged by fire, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA). Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, confirmed the incident in a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The fire outbreak, which occurred at No. 16, Alhaji Jubril Street, started around 7:05 a.m. and swiftly spread from one wing of the duplex to the other.
The initial blaze was traced back to an electrical surge from an air conditioner unit in one of the rooms of the main duplex, comprising approximately five rooms. The flames then extended to the adjoining wing, which housed three bedrooms and a living room.
Upon receiving distress calls through the state’s Toll Free Emergency numbers 767 and 112, LASEMA’s response team from the Command and Control Centre at Alausa arrived promptly at 8:02 a.m. Thankfully, all occupants were safely evacuated, and there were no reports of injuries or fatalities.
The fire was eventually contained through combined efforts of LASEMA’s Response Team and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service. Despite significant damage to the duplex’s roofing and interiors, surrounding buildings were protected from the inferno.
“The quick response of our units ensured that personal belongings and furniture were salvaged,” Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu noted.
He also mentioned that during the dampening down process, one firefighter fell from the ceiling but was swiftly rescued and treated by the Lagos State Ambulance Service at the scene.
As of the latest update, the fire has been completely extinguished, and operations have concluded with both LASEMA and the fire service remaining vigilant at the site.
