The Kano State House of Assembly has accepted Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf’s request to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for a loan of N4 billion to complete the Tiga and Challawa hydroelectric power project.
Following its adoption in plenary by House Leader Lawan Hussaini (NNPP-Dala), the resolution was accepted.
Hussaini, the motion’s introducer, claimed that because the loan would only have a single digit interest rate, it wouldn’t harm the state’s economy.
When it was all said and done, he said, the project will help revive the state’s declining sector.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Tiga Independent Power Plant project was initiated by the administration of the former Gov. Rabi’u Kwankwaso, to generate 35MW, using Challawa and Tiga dams.
Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje who came into power in 2015 continued with the project.
NAN reports that Kabir-Yusuf had sent a letter of request to the house seeking for its approval which was read by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore at plenary.
The governor said the soft loan would be used for the completion of the project aimed at boosting the economy of the state through reviving industries, irrigation farming and powering street lights around the city.
