President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive for civil servants who relocated abroad while still drawing salaries from the government to refund the money.
The directive came during an award night organized by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation to mark the 2024 Civil Service Week.
Represented by Sen. George Akume, Tinubu expressed disappointment over the discovery of employees receiving salaries without formally resigning after relocating abroad. He emphasized the need for accountability, stating that both the offenders and their supervisors must be punished for their involvement in the fraud.
“We must ensure those responsible are held accountable and restitution is made,” Tinubu declared. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing challenges within the civil service sector to enhance efficiency and service delivery.
The event also saw the recognition of outstanding civil servants, with top prizes including a Brand New 2023 JAC JS4 Luxury Model SUV, a 2 Bedroom semi-detached bungalow, and a serviced plot of land measuring 400sqm awarded to deserving officers.
