In a notable legislative move, the House of Representatives has approved a bill mandating the return to Nigeria’s former national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”
The bill was introduced by House Leader Julius Ihonvbare and brought forward for its second reading on Thursday, May 23.
After thorough deliberation in the committee of the whole, the bill was approved and subsequently passed on its third reading. The next step for the legislation is to gain concurrence from the Senate. If the Senate approves, the bill will then be sent to the president for final approval.
This decision marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s national identity, harkening back to the anthem that was in use from 1960 until it was replaced in 1978. The reinstatement of “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” would reflect a return to the country’s historical roots and traditions.
