EPL implements new VAR rules over Tottenham vs Liverpool saga

Posted on October 7, 2023

The English Premier League, EPL, has published new video assistant referee (VAR) standards.

They will come on immediately following Luis Diaz’s disallowed goal in Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to Tottenham. PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) later admitted that a “significant human error” had happened.

Darren England, who was on VAR duty during the game, mistook Diaz’s goal for one awarded by the on-field crew and immediately stated “check complete” to confirm Diaz was onside.

The on-field crew, however, interpreted this to mean that their original call of offside was correct, and play restarted, generating a commotion.

The revised standards, according to PGMOL, will “improve the clarity of communication between the referee and the VAR team in relation to on-field decisions.”

To avoid a repeat of what happened with Diaz, VARs will now confirm the final judgment with the assistant VAR before confirming it to the on-field officials.
