Euro 2024: Serbia threatens to withdraw from over vile chants

Posted on June 20, 2024

Serbia has issued a stark warning about potentially pulling out of the ongoing Euro 2024 competition, accusing Croatian and Albanian fans of chanting offensive slogans during a match.

The controversy erupted during Croatia’s 2-2 draw with Albania in Group B, where supporters from both nations allegedly chanted “kill, kill, kill the Serb” in the 59th minute.

Jovan Surbatovic, the General Secretary of the Football Association of Serbia, has formally requested UEFA to take disciplinary action against both Croatia and Albania. Highlighting the severity of the situation, Surbatovic indicated that Serbia might withdraw from the tournament if UEFA does not impose sanctions.

In a statement via RTS, Surbatovic expressed his outrage: “What happened is scandalous and we will ask UEFA for sanctions, even if it means not continuing the competition. We are sure that they will be punished, because they have already responded to our appeal to remove the so-called journalist from Albania from the championship.”

The incident has sparked significant tension, underscoring longstanding regional animosities and raising questions about the management of fan behavior at international sporting events. As the situation unfolds, the football world watches closely to see how UEFA will respond to these serious allegations.
