In a targeted operation on Friday, May 31, 2024, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detained 40 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud across various areas of Abuja.
This crackdown reflects the commission’s ongoing efforts to combat cybercrime in Nigeria.
The operation resulted in the arrest of 18 suspects in the Dawaki vicinity, with the remaining 12 apprehended at different locations within the capital city.
According to a statement by the EFCC, the arrests were made following credible intelligence indicating the suspects’ involvement in online fraudulent activities.
During the operation, law enforcement officers confiscated 23 mobile phones, four laptops, and four vehicles from the suspects, which are believed to be instruments of their illicit activities.
The EFCC stated that investigations are ongoing and, pending their conclusion, the suspects will face legal proceedings in court. This operation underscores the EFCC’s commitment to tackling cybercrime and bringing perpetrators to justice.
