A man named Osazee Imagbenikaro has been sentenced to jail by Justice C.A. Obiozor of the Federal High Court in Benin City for the act of spraying naira notes, which is illegal under Nigerian law.
Imagbenikaro faced a two-count charge related to spraying naira notes, a violation of Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (Establishment) Act 2007. He pled guilty to the charges during a court session on Thursday, May 16.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) released a statement on Friday detailing the case. Imagbenikaro was apprehended for his actions at a funeral ceremony held at Ogida Police Barracks in Benin City, Edo State.
During the proceedings, the prosecution counsel, Francis Jirbo, called for a fitting sentence in accordance with the law. In contrast, the defense counsel requested leniency, emphasizing the defendant’s remorse.
Justice Obiozor sentenced Imagbenikaro to six months’ imprisonment on each count or a fine of N100,000 for each count. Additionally, Imagbenikaro was required to provide a written undertaking to maintain good behavior in the future.
